- A small order of shrubs and trees of the cohort Gentianales, closely allied to the olive family, and distinguished from it by the uniform presence of four stamens and four petals, and often of rudimentary stipules. It includes about 9 species. belonging to 3 genera, of which Salvadora is the type. They are natives of Asia, especially the western part, and of Africa and the Mascarene Islands. They bear opposite entire leaves, and a trichotomous and panicled inflorescence, often of dense sessile clusters.
