- n. See sand-gate.
- n. The rod or lever which controls the sand in the sand-box of a locomotive or a street-railway car. The sand is allowed to fall upon the rail in front of the driving-wheels. The engineman controls it in the locomotive by a lever and rod, or it has the form of an ejector, working by air from the brake-reservoir. In the street-car it is operated by a push-rod under the foot of the motorman.
