A genus of siphonapterous or aphanipterous insects, erected to contain the so-called jigger, chigoe, chique, or pique of tropical America, S. penetrans, a peculiar flea which during the dry season attacks exposed parts of the human body, especially the feet, and burrows under the skin or nails.
