  1. A musical instrument, properly of the oboe class, but with a tube of metal, invented in 1863 by a French band-master, Sarrus. Eight different sizes or varieties are made, so as to form a complete series, as of the saxophone, and are named either from their fundamental key or from their relative compass. Compare saxophone.
