- n. The local name in parts of the Italian Alps of a limestone of various colors, and of different geological ages. The typical scaglia is a reddish argillaceous limestone with a decidedly conchoidal fracture. This rock is of Jurassic age; but there is an upper scaglia which is of the age of the Upper Cretaceous.
