  • noun A small genus of agaricaceous fungi, having the pileus coriaceous and the lamellæ split and revolute. A dozen or more species have been described, most of which are probably mere forms of one or two polymorphic species. The plants are very common and cosmopolitan, occurring on dead wood. S. alneum is the type of the genus and the most common form.
