  • a split second: Latin law term for a legal fiction of an interval of time separating two events that can't practically be separated but the order of which affects a legal issue. I once read of a peer and his heir apparent who were killed simultaneously in the Blitz, and the issue of who succeeded to something (surely not the title itself? how would that remainder work?) depended on who died first; it was adjudged that the elder did by a split second.
