- n. A pit in which steel ingots are placed immediately after casting, in order that the mass may acquire a uniform temperature, the interior of such ingots remaining for some time after casting too hot to roll satisfactorily. These pits are generally known as “Gjera soaking-pits,” from the name of the metallurgist who first introduced them into use.
