  • noun A citizen of Sparta; an ancient Laconian of the Dorian race. See Spartan. Aristotle recognizes only one thousand families of the ancient Spartiates; and their landed possessions, the very groundwork of their state and its discipline, had in great measure passed into the hands of women.
