1. n. A genus of small American finches or sparrows, the chipping-sparrows, having the wings pointed, the tail long and emarginate, the back streaked, and the under parts not streaked in the adult. It includes several of the most familiar sparrows of the United States, as the chippy or chip-bird, S. socialis or domestica; the field-sparrow, S. agrestis or pusilla; the tree-sparrow, S. monticola; the clay-colored bunting and Brewer's bunting, S. pallida and S. breweri; and the black-chinned sparrow, S. atrigularis.
