  • noun One of the waves set up at the stern of a vessel in motion of the same general character but of less pronounced form than the bow-wave (which see). Besides the diagonal waves diverging from the stern, there is a series of transverse waves, of gradually diminishing size, following the vessel and traveling at the same speed.
