- noun A thick, clear liquid compound prepared by treating castor-oil with concentrated sulphuric acid, adding sodium chlorid, and neutralizing the product with sodium carbonate. It does not dissolve in water, but readily forms with it an emulsion; it easily dissolves large quantities of phenol, menthol, etc.; hence its use in pharmacy. Also known by the trade-names solvin and polysolvol.
