- noun In the extinct Blastoidea, the open space at the summit of the calyx where the ambulacra meet. This area is paved with a number of minute calcareous plates, which may be regular or irregular in arrangement, but leave at each angle of the summit-opening a small passageway by means of which the ambulacra communicate with the peristome.
