Like nearly all Europeans in East Africa, the group wore a “bush kit” of khaki clothing and “double terais”—two felt hats stacked on top of each other with a layer of red flannel sewn in between, to protect them from the sun’s actinic ultraviolet rays, which supposedly damaged the brain and nervous system.
