  1. An optical apparatus dependent for its effects upon the persistence of retinal impressions. It consists of a cylinder or disk upon which is depicted a series of images representing periodic phases of the same picture. When the disk or cylinder is rapidly revolved, the image of one phase persists while the image of the next falls upon the retina; so that the object seems to go through a series of movements.
