  1. The change of color which is exhibited by certain animals, such as the chameleon, anoli, and many cephalopods. In 1883, while stndying tinctumutation or the color-changing function in certain animals, I reared a large number of newts, or salamanders, from the eggs. The eggs were placed in shallow vessels which were covered by colored glasses, blue, orange, green, and red. Sci. Amer. Sup., Nov. 22, 1902, p. 339.
