  • noun In exper. phonet., a part of Atkinson's bent-wire instrument for obtaining the position of a point on the surface of the tongue. It consists of a small coil of wire, which may be slid along the principal (exploring) wire or locked in place, and which is set in the depression between the two front teeth.
