- noun A box or chamber which contains tubes, or to which tubes are connected or attached; specifically, in the surface-condenser of a steam-engine, the chamber or part of the condenser into which the tubes which form the cooling or condensing surface are all fastened air-tight, and into which the circulating water is passed by the pump in order that it may thence flow through the tubes.
