• noun A genus of spire-bearing brachiopods, belonging to the order Telotremata, which have an extended and rostrate ventral valve with concave and coalesced deltidial plates, and a pair of pouch-like plates just within the margin of the dorsal valve, which are the extension of the dental sockets. Uncites gryphus is a highly characteristic fossil of the Middle Devonian in Germany.
