  1. In Sanskrit lit., a name given to a series of treatises of theosophic and philosophic contents. They are of different dates. They exhibit the earliest attempts of the Hindu mind to penetrate into the mysteries of creation and existence. An upanishad is a passage of more philosophic or theosophic character, an excursus into a higher and freer region of thought, away from the details of the ceremonial and their exposition. Whitney, Amer. Jour. Philol., VII. 1.
