A genus of Alcidæ; the guillemots and murres: used with various restrictions for any of the slender-billed birds of the auk family, as U. troile, the common foolish murre or guillemot, and U. grylle, the black guillemot. Since the genus Lomvia was instituted for the former, Uria has usually been restricted to the latter, in which sense it is otherwise called
Cephus or Cepphus. See cuts underguillemot and murre.
