  • noun A remarkable grallatorial bird of Africa, related to the herons and storks: so called on account of the size of the head and monstrous shape of the beak; the whale-headed stork, or shoebill, Balæniceps rex, the only representative of the family Balænicipidæ. See cut under Balænicipidæ.
