I was taught it was necessary to say 'white rabbits' to greet the month before saying anything to anyone on that morning to get good luck. I think I read that somewhere the superstition includes a need to say 'jack rabbits' the previous evening too, but unfortunately I don't have any books on folklore to hand, so I can't guarantee the correctness of that.
