- n. An old term of endearment applied to a favorite son, dependent, or the like; a darling. See white, adjective, 5.

[capitalized] A member of an illegal agrarian association formed in Ireland about the year 1761, whose object was “to do justice to the poor by restoring the ancient commons and redressing other grievances” (Lecky). The members of the association assembled at night with white frocks over their other clothes (whence the name), threw down fences, and leveled inclosures (being hence also called
Levelers ), destroyed the property of harsh landlords or their agents, the Protestant clergy, the tithe-collectors, and any others who had made themselves obnoxious to the association. Also used attributively.
