from The Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia

  • n. A European social wasp, or paper-wasp, Vespa sylvestris, which hangs its nest in a tree.
  • n. A wasp which burrows in wood, as certain species of Crabronidæ.
  • n. A horntail; any member of the Uroceridæ (or Siricidæ), the lnrvæ of all of which are wood-borers; a tailed wasp, as Urocerus or Sirex gigas.

Sorry, no etymologies found.

  • Using the term 'wasp' in a broader sense, the horntail/great wood-wasp Urocerus gigas is certainly larger, and I think there are even larger species of parasitic wasps in other parts of Europe.
