The ASMR is high for the first year of life, then falls to a very low level for ages one to about forty-four years.
The ASMR of those age 85 and above stood at 260.9 per 1,000 in 1900, and at 235.7 in 1940; yet by 1980 it had fallen to 159.8 a 9.7 percent decline during 1900-40, and a 32.2 percent decline during 1940-80.
The ASMR of nonwhite males aged 15-44 years was at least three times that of white males of the same ages.
Age-specific mortality rates ASMR, see Definition Box; also called age-specific death rates, ASDR show a characteristic curve of the type shown in Table 4-4 and Figure 4-3.
The decline in the ASMR for the 75-84 year age group was even more impressive over this later era: while this group’s mortality had declined by only about 10 percent from 1900 to 1940 (from 123.3 to 112.0), it dropped to only about half of the 1940 level (to 66.9) by 1980.
