Small nit to pick: ajax isn't a Java application, it's a set of JavaScript-based techniques to make web applications more responsive. Despite the similar names, Java and JavaScript have almost nothing to do with each other.
Given its current near-ubiquity in some circles, ajax is pretty young: Microsoft invented the underlying technology (xmlhttprequest) around 2000, but the techniques weren't widely used until Jesse James Garret wrote about them (and coined the term 'ajax') in 2005.

When I entered it I didn't even have any idea it was anything but a brand name, and only saw otherwise after a quickie google search. I hereby retract all Java reference and admit to voluminous ignosis regarding same.
