  • Short for dampener, long for damper. Spotted while reading the news. Quick search shows many examples, but uncommon version of damper/dampener.
    Uncommon enough that people may think it's a typo error.

    19th century law dictionaries refer to the French word dampner means to condemn : to condemn to death.   A 19th century Norman dictionary lists it as 'to be cancelled'.
