  • A huge number of Italian cheeses have this name. In Liguria, for instance, you can find formaggetta del Ponente, formaggetta savonese (di Stella, della Valle Stura), formaggetta della Val Graveglia (di Bonassola, di Vàise, dell’alta Valle Scrivia, dell’alta Valle Stura, della Val di Vara).

  • Is there significance to it being formaggetta rather than formaggia, Pro? Does it mean "little cheese" or something?

  • Yes, c_b, formaggetta simply means "little cheese" (but is surprisingly feminine). What I mean is that if you ask for "formaggetta" you will get a different product depending on the part of Italy where you are.

  • I got the 2nd part okay--just wondered why it's formaggetta del Ponente rather than formaggia del Ponente. :) Thanks!

  • Maybe because it's a rather small wheel :)
