  • Here in New Mexico (that is, provided I'm really located there) we have a popular dish called huevos rancheros. If the slang connotation is so strong in Spanish, I wonder if that name is intended as innuendo. Seems innocent enough in the literal sense. There's got to be a way to order eggs without implying something else, right?

  • huevo (Spanish) = egg (English). But sometimes we use the word huevo (usually in plural: 'los huevos') with the same meaning that 'the balls' in English. When your friend ordered 'huevos duros' she was ordering hard-boiled eggs. Be careful: I've heard that 'the balls of horse' ('huevos de caballo') are eaten in some places!

  • A friend of mine once ordered "huevos duros" in a restaurant in Mexico thinking that she was ordering hard-cooked eggs. She got a quick lesson in idiomatic Spanish, needless to say.
