  • A small bird of the open plains of eastern Australia. As with phalaropes, the female is larger and more brightly colored than the male, but until recently it was often classified with the buttonquail in the order Gruiformes. Recent research has shown that the Plains-Wanderer is actually a Charadriiforme like the phalarope and that its closest relative may be the South American seedsnipes.
