  • The ramkie is a homemade guitar--the blik kitaar of Southern Africa--made from an empty oilcan for the body, a wooden neck that is sometimes stuck straight through the can and sometimes fixed to a wooden "lid," and frets made from U-shaped pieces of wire affixed to the front of the neck. Its four to six strings are made either of nylon fishing line or unraveled bicycle brake wire. The ramkie is predominantly found in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Malawi. A modern electric version of the ramkie, with a professional neck, is made in Capetown by African Oil Can Guitars.
