  • I did a long boat trip through the Riau archipelago in Indonesia. I soon made friends with the chap in the bunk next to me, Elwin. Early on in the 3 day trip I asked him about washing facilities on the boat. I was a bit disoriented at this stage, having suddenly been made aware that my 'cabin' ticket didn't in fact mean a private room but simply that I got to sleep inside the boat rather than on the roof. Elwin laughed and said mandi koboi, 'cowboy bath', then demonstrated splashing water on the face and wiping a grimy sleeve across the brow.
