reesetee Wow, what a nice list! Oct 25, 2007
yarb Mu and Lemuria are mythical lands similar to Shangri-la. Some say these places are connected by a network of subterranean passages. And from Welsh mythology there is the isle of Annwn, very like the Gaelic Tír na nÓg.
Marvellous list, a favourite. Oct 25, 2007
arby Probably. My brain is easily confused by things that sound and/or look similar. What a cool legend about Brigadoon the village! Oct 25, 2007
skipvia Brigadoon is from a Lerner and Loewe musical. Here's a description from Wikipedia:
"...a mysterious Scottish village that appears for only one day every hundred years, though to the villagers, the passing of each century seems no longer than one night. The enchantment is viewed by them as a blessing rather than a curse, for it saved the village from destruction. According to their covenant with God, no one from Brigadoon may ever leave, or the enchantment will be broken and the site and all its inhabitants will disappear into the mist forever."
Don't know about the ship. Perhaps you're thinking of a brig? Oct 25, 2007
arby Thanks u! I love your list.
skipvia - I thought Brigadoon was just a ship and/or a musical. It's a place too? Oct 25, 2007
uselessness Great list! You might find some inspiration in my list of names for the afterlife because a lot of them are similarly evocative and mystical. :-) Oct 25, 2007
skipvia Also, Brigadoon and Shangri-la. Oct 25, 2007
arby Ooh, good one skipvia! Oct 25, 2007
skipvia Avalon! Oct 25, 2007
arby For Gilead I am using the fictional location, not the biblical Gilead, which apparently corresponds to the modern kingdom of Jordan. See Wikipedia:
"Gilead is the principal city of New Canaan, from which Roland Deschain, the central character in The Dark Tower series of novels by Stephen King, hails. King's Gilead is said to be a namesake of the Biblical Gilead." Oct 25, 2007
