  • It's Yiddish for the parents of the person of the bride or groom. The father is the "Mekhuten" and the mother is the "mekhutayneste." Very useful, and to the best of my knowledge, non-existent in English. It represents the unification of families by marriage. According to YIVO standard convention for transliteration from Yiddish to roman text, it should probably be "makhutonim."
