The moment you fear, you are nobody. It is fearlessness that brings

Heaven even in a moment. Therefore, “Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached.

In today’s world of Globalization, a fluent knowledge of English has become a valuable skill and is essential for any Career. Inspite of learning the English language for more` than a decade, English is still a nightmare for Indian students. The first and foremost challenge before us at present is how to produce employable graduates.

The place or status English enjoys in India, especially in Tamil Nadu, is a matter of Pride. But it is an indisputable fact that importance is not given to the spoken form of English. Now-a- days Communicative language teaching has become popular because learning literature and enjoying it does not help much in developing oral Communicative efficiency. Even most of the meritorious students are not able to talk in English.

Extensive research has revealed that committing errors in the process of learning is natural. A child while trying to learn its mother-tongue commits a number of mistakes. But the child is neither scolded nor made fun of. But very often the teachers are dismayed and furious at the errors made by the students. This reaction tends to develop an inferiority complex and consequently it affects the learners’ oral communication. Moreover the anxiety of almost all parents is to see their children talk in English. “Parents are first teachers and teachers are second parents.” There arises the need for the introduction of “Commutainment”.

‘Commutainment’ is a portmanteau word. The word ‘Commutainment’ is a combination of ‘communication’ and ‘entertainment’. It means ‘communication through entertainment’. The word has been used by Albert P’Rayan in some of his writings which became the source of motivation for this workshop. Commutainment is an innovative approach, a strategy to make a significant improvement in speaking and understanding English. It will certainly minimize the teachers’ authority and maximize the learners’ autonomy. Instead of dominating the whole process of learning in an entertaining way, we can create a taste and passion for language.

Commutainment activities such as role play, puzzles, humour, word games, problem solving exercises, funny anectodes, jokes, mock interviews, group discussion and voice training techniques provide meaningful communication, develop team spirit, foster critical and creative thinking and create opportunities to interact with one another. In a non-threatening, stress-free environment, the teachers can promote not only speaking skills, but also self –confidence and personality enhancement. The act of communication itself will become a form of entertainment.

We all know that, teaching is a highly noble profession and teachers are always a boon to society. They occupy a pivotal position in Education. In the present century, the role of a teacher has totally changed. The teacher is no longer a mere transmitter or imparter of knowledge. Especially a language teacher not only co-ordinates conventional and technological pedagogy, but also guides the learners to acquire considerable proficiency in English. In this competitive world, those who speak clearly and concisely alone can unlock the doors to success.

To conclude, the main purpose of this workshop is to change the mindset of the teachers. In an operation theatre, the very important person is not the doctor but the patient. Without the co-operation of the patient, the doctor cannot do anything. The same way in a classroom, the very important person is not the teacher but the student. The success of the teacher lies in the student’s success. The students are the extension of ourselves. Whatever efforts taken by the teacher should reach and benefit the student community. Everything is possible only in a fear- free atmosphere. Let us all hope that this learner- centred and learner- friendly teaching methodology “Commutainment” will surely enhance the learners’ communicative competence.

    Thank you
