  • "Facilis descensus Averno" -- "The descent into Hell is easy," from Virgil's The Aeneid. "Averno" comes from the Greek "a-ornis," meaning "without bird." "Avernus" is a lake in Campania, Italy. It was once believed to be the entrance to the underworld, emitting sulfurous vapors that were said to kill all birds.
