  • Essayist Joseph Epstein claims to have coined this word. (WSJ 11/5/14: A19) He says 'virtucrat' means, "those who derive their grand sense of themselves from the virtuousness of their opinions, and of no opinions more than their political opinions. These opinions fortify virtucrats morally, assuring them of their essential goodness."

Think of haughty Al Gore who demanded a carbon tax ten years ago, because he was so sure the polar ice caps would be gone by 2014. The Antarctic ice is bigger than ever now, and polar caps are vast. And he rolls his eyes with an air of haughty virtue at atmospheric science Ph.D's who disagree on the science and calls them 'deniers,' while Gore himself is no scientist.

These opinions fortify virtucrats morally, assuring them of their essential goodness."

  • To be used very sparingly or it loses it's meaning. How many girls were drop-dead gorgeous? Maybe one or two per decade. Raquel Welch, Rita Hayworth, Ava Gardner, Audrey Hepburn, Heddy Lamarr, Carmella Bing?

  • While this page mentions the Greek root of austere, it neglects to say what the word means in Greek, which is relevant. It means "dry."
