  1. Also written ostringer and astringer, early modern English ostreger, from Middle English ostreger, from Old French ostruchier, austruchier (autrucier, autoursier—Roquefort) (Middle Latin reflex astorerius), from Middle Latin *austrucarius, one whose business it was to breed and fly goshawks, from *austrucus, austurcus, astruco, asturco, austurgo, asturgo, asturgius, ostorius, etc., variations (perhaps due in part to confusion with certain forms of ostrich, q. v.) of austur, astur, astor, Late Latin astur (later Italian astore = Portuguese açor = Old Spanish aztor, Spanish azor = Provencal austor = Old French austour, ostor, hostur, modern F. autour), a goshawk: see Astur. The n is inserted, as in porringer, passenger, messenger, etc.
