A compound having no obvious meaning, as to its second element, in English, and hence (being apparently only a book-name) prob. an adaptation of some foreign name, perhaps of an unrecorded G. *blutstrenge, from blut, = English blood, + strenge, tightness, strictness, from streng, tight, strict, strong, = English strong: see strong and string. The name would have reference to the (supposed) styptic qualities of the plant. See N. English D.
