  • I overuse this one.

  • I prefer sack of shit.

  • I love sack of shit. I particularly like lying sack of shit.

Though, now that I think about it--isn't it interesting that you can't call a person a crock of shit, but you can call him/her a sack of shit? Similarly, when someone tells you a load of bull, you wouldn't really say (at least I wouldn't) "that's a sack of shit." I'd say "crock" in that instance. I wonder why that is?

  • My sister & invented the Britlish version - satchel of shite.

ETA - this is for sack of shit, not crock.

  • C_b, maybe it's because a sack has a soft, squishy, humanoid quality that both crock and load are lacking? Crock and load are hard to anthropomorphosize (& I cannot spell that word for the life of me, let's see if I got it right?)

  • It might be anthropomorphize, but I could just be a lying satchel of shite.

  • Hey jennarenn! I found a page that's even worse than curry! ;-)

A friend of mine, who can't correctly remember figures of speech to save her life, has been known to say a pile of crock instead of this. I like the image....

  • Ha! Once again I doubled a syllable - anthro.. goes in my list of "Words I Used to Misread".

  • For me a crock of shit is a situation, not a person. When events go against you through extreme bad luck, incompetence or disorganisation, or usually a combo of the three, what you have is a crock of shit (or crock, for short, or crock of arse. I too have heard reese's friend's pile of crock, though I've yet to hear of a crock of crock). So no anthropomorphism here.

E.g. Bollocks, another quarter-final defeat on penalties. What a crock of shit that is.

    A sack of shit, that's a person.

    October 12, 2007

  • Yes, that's what I was saying. Crock of shit is never applied to a person, but sack of shit is never applied to a situation.

    October 13, 2007

  • In my eagerness to talk about crocks of shit, I failed to read your comment properly.

    October 13, 2007

  • Oh come on, yarb. That's a complete ... uh... what the hell, now I can't think of the phrase... oh yes. Honeywagon of nightsoil if ever I heard one!

  • I used to live in Darwin. In north Australia the saltwater crocodile is a native animal. Since the ban on hunting in 1970's numbers have increased and now crocodiles are spreading their territory. Often they encroach on urban areas, in fact crocodile catchers are employed to regularly remove them from Darwin harbour; the annual catch is about 250.

A few years ago one crocodile, a modest fellow of about 1.5 metres, slipped through a hole in the fence at the local sewage farm and made a new home for himself ...
