  1. = Dutch expediëren = German expediren = Danish expedere = Swedish expediera, from Old French expedier, French expédier, despatch (from Middle Latin as if *expeditare, freq.), = Spanish Portuguese expedir = Italian espedire, spedire, despatch, from Latin expedire, expedite, orig. free the feet, as from a snare, hence disengage, despatch, etc., impersonal be serviceable or expedient, from ex, out, + pes (ped-) = English foot. Cf. impede, despatch, depeach, impeach. Also expedite; hence (from Latin expedire) expedient, expedite, etc.
