  1. n. In South America, the grub of the large coleopterous insect Calandra palmarum. It lives in the stems of palm-trees, and also in the sugar-cane, and is regarded as a delicacy by the natives. See Calandra, 2.
  2. n. In the West Indies, either of two species of palms, Astrocaryum aculeatum and Acrocomia sclerocarpa, the wood of which is very hard, heavy, and durable, and takes a fine polish.
