- n. A compound adjective termination, usually equivalent to the simple -ic, as hysteric, hysterical, but often slightly differentiated, as in comic, comic-al, historic, historic-al, politic, politic-al. When the form in -ic is used chiefly or exclusively as a noun (either in singular or in plural form), the adjective is regularly in -ic-al: as, critic, critic-al, music, music-al, logic, logic-al, politics, politic-al, etc. Adverbs formed from adjectives regularly ending in -ic, but which may have -ical, regularly take -al- before -ly: as, graphic, graphic-al-ly; intrinsic, intrinsic-al-ly. See -ic and -al.
