The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) establishes and identifies one title or edition of a title from one specific publisher, and is unique to that edition. The thinking is that this allows for more efficient marketing of titles by booksellers, libraries, universities, wholesalers and distributors. Recently, every ISBN was converted from 10 to 13 digits, although it was recent enough that there remains a need to distinguish between old numbers and new. Thus, ISBN-10 vs. ISBN-13.
