Literally a 'Karelian pastry', this Finnish staple is also known simply as a piirakka. It is a savoury rye flour pastry filled with rice, carrot or potato.

I think it's a polysynthetic language so word (and phrase) length gets a bit out of hand!
These are very tasty snacks and probably easier to make than they look. Rye dough is quite user-friendly :-) Plenty of recipes on the internet. A friend who did military service in the Finnish army said the soldiers practically live on piirakka.
