  1. n. A Greek or Albanian brigand. As a class, the klephts were originally those Greeks who, after the Turkish conquest in the fifteenth century, formed armed bands or communities in mouutain fastnesses, and maintained their independence, defying and plundering the Turks and their adherents. They gave powerful aid to the patriots in the war of independence (1821–8), after which those who kept np their organization became mere robbers. They have been suppressed in Greece.
