What on earth is this word meant to be? Mussulman, muscle-man, mussel-man? None make sense. (There are no Muslims anywhere near here in the narrative.)

Probably a reference to muselmann, a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp who was near death from starvation and exhaustion.
