- n. A running ornament based on a continuous scroll which is usually elaborated with acanthus-leaves. It is a distinctly classic type, but has passed over into Byzantine and Gothic decoration.

Friezes and bands were commonly ornamented with the foliated scroll or _rinceau_ (a convenient French term for which we have no equivalent).
