- n. A genus of megatherioid edentate mammals founded by Owen in 1840 upon remains of a species called S. leptocephalum, from the Pleistocene of Patagonia. The genus contains a number of species whose characters are intermediate in some respects between those of Megatherium and those of Mylodon.
Examples
“To these were now added the _Mylodon Darwinii_, a giant sloth; the scelidotherium, a somewhat smaller form; the great camel-like, yet odd-toed, macrauchenia; and the toxodon, as large as a hippopotamus, yet having a strange resemblance to the little rodents.”
